Before your appointment we will send you several forms to complete. These forms help us get an idea of which ADHD symptoms you are experiencing, how they affect your day-to-day life and how long you have been experiencing them. We will ask you to get someone who knew you well in childhood to complete a form about your symptoms then, and someone who has known you well as an adult to provide their perspective of your symptoms too. We will also ask you to complete some questionnaires which look for mental health conditions such as anxiety and OCD so we can understand your experience in more depth.
You can have your appointment with us at our clinic in Burley-in-Wharfedale or online via video chat. Once you are ready to start we will begin by asking some questions about your background and life experience so we can get a full picture of how ADHD might have impacted you across your life. We will then use a clinical interview to ask specific questions about your ADHD symptoms to help us determine how many of these symptoms you experience, how they affect your life and how long they have been a problem for you.
After the appointment we will write up your assessment report. This will cover the information you told us about your background, the ADHD symptoms you experience, how they impact your life, and the results of the questionnaires you completed about other mental health conditions. We will send this for you to review and you can let us know if there is anything you would like us to edit. When you are happy with your report, we can then send it on to your GP or anyone else you would like us to make it available to. We will also send you some resources to help you process your diagnosis and provide guidance in how you might manage your treatment going forwards. If you wish to access ADHD medication we will then refer you on to our in house prescriber to get this process started.
ADHD symptoms can be managed through therapy, medication or a combination of both. If you are interested in accessing medication we strongly encourage you speak to your GP before paying for a private assessment as you need to ensure they would be happy to enter a shared care agreement. You can read more about accessing medication after a private ADHD assessment and shared care in the 'medication and shared care' section on this page.
You may be able to access support in a number of ways after receiving an ADHD diagnosis. If you are in employment or studing your place of work or university will be required to make 'reasonable adjustments' to support you. Through sharing your diagnosis with your employer or place of study they can work with you to make changes to support you to succeed.
The 'Access to Work' scheme offers funding for specialist equipment, software and/or support workers and coaches to help you in your job. If you are a student, you may be eligible to apply for disabled students allowance. You would use your ADHD assessment report as part of your evidence when applying for this. DSA provides funding for equipment, software, support workers and/or coaches to help you with your studies.
Upon receiving a diagnosis of ADHD you may be eligible to receive personal independence payments (PIP) from the government to help you with the additional cost accrued in your day-to-day life as a result of living with ADHD.
We strongly advise you speak to your GP about how likely they would be to accept a shared care agreement before paying privately for an assessment, especially if you think you might want to access medication to manage your ADHD symptoms. If your GP is happy to take on a shared care agreement once you have completed titration privately, your medication would then be prescribed by them at the standard NHS prescription cost (currently £9.65). Not all GPs will agree to this and if they don't it would mean you would need to pay to see the private prescriber more regularly and continue to pay the full private prescription cost of your medication (around £100 - £150 per prescription).
If you think you could benefit from undergoing an ADHD Diagnostic Assessment then send us a message or give us a call and we will be happy to help.
